Zirconia is a white ceramic with mechanical properties close to metal. The crown is designed on a digital scan and milled from a single block, then layered or stained and glazed for colour. Because there is no metal core, light passes through the material in a way that resembles enamel, and the gum margin stays natural instead of darkening over the years.
If the tooth only needs its front surface improved and the rest of it is sound, a veneer removes far less tooth structure. If there is not enough tooth left above the gum to hold a crown, the tooth may need extraction and an implant instead of a crown that will fail in a year.
Where several units are involved we add a try-in appointment before glazing, so the shape and shade are approved before the crowns are finished.
Metal-porcelain crowns cost €100 and are still a sound choice for a back tooth on a tight budget. The trade-offs are the metal margin that can show as the gum recedes, and the opacity. Zirconia at €170 avoids both. For visible teeth we recommend zirconia, or E-max where maximum translucency is wanted on a single front tooth.
Brush and floss as you would a natural tooth; zirconia does not decay but the tooth underneath it can, at the margin. Avoid biting hard objects. If you grind at night, wear a night guard — the crown will survive it, but the opposing teeth may not.

Ten to fifteen years is a realistic expectation with good hygiene, and often longer. The material itself does not wear or stain; what limits lifespan is decay at the margin and gum health.
Shade is chosen against your natural teeth in daylight, and for front teeth we do a try-in before glazing. Matching a single central incisor is the hardest case in dentistry and we will say so honestly rather than promise an invisible result.
